Breathnach calls on Government to implement Education Committee recommendations

– Breathnach was speaking in support of a report by the Oireachtas Education Committee-
Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach spoke in the Dáíl on Back to School Costs, the School Rebuilding Programme and the workload of Teaching Principals. These were the issues set out in an Oireachtas Education Committee Report which made 25 recommendations for the Government to implement.

Breathnach commented “As a former teacher and principal for 30 years I am well aware of the struggles facing schools and their teachers, principals, students and families. The Education Committee report made a number of recommendations which I hope will be implemented as a matter of urgency.

“These recommendations include the expansion of the School Rebuilding Programme, particularly special classes for students with autism and other special needs. Another is the retention and expansion of green spaces for P.E. which is vital for children’s health.”

“Back to school costs are rising year on year, making the idea of free education a myth. The report recommended an increase in the school book rental scheme and the introduction of non-badged  generic uniforms to reduce costs. One of the major aspects of the report was the reduction of workload for Teaching Principals. These are Principals who have to deal with the day to day running of the school as well as having their own class to teach.

He concluded saying “I hope the Government will take heed of these recommendations and implement them as soon as possible.”
