Breathnach welcomes extension of BEEP deadline and calls on Louth farmers to apply

-This follows calls from the IFA and other farming groups for an extension to the November 1st deadline –

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has welcomed the decision by Minister Michael Creed to extend the deadline for the Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) scheme and encouraged Louth farmers to avail of the scheme.

Following questions from Fianna Fáil TD Charlie McConalogue, Minister Creed revealed Louth had the second lowest amount of BEEP applications when the scheme was opened earlier in the year. There were 182 applications from Louth, compared to 2,070 in Galway.

Breathnach commented “ I am glad Minister Creed has listened to farmers and farming organisations to extend the deadline for the BEEP scheme. BEEP was launched this year to increase economic and environmental efficiency in the suckler herd through better data on herd performance. Farmers will be entitled to payments of up to €40 per eligible calf.”

He concluded “I hope this extension will allow more Louth farmers to apply for the scheme. Animals may now be weighed up to and including November 8th, and weight data is to be submitted to Irish Cattle Breeding Federation by November 15th.
