Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has encouraged people to contact Louth County Council or if they notice a property which has been left vacant. Breathnach contacted which confirmed they had recorded 140 vacant properties in Louth with the breakdown as follows: 48 detached, 33 semi-detached 33, 51 terraced, 4 Flats/Apartments and 4 Other types.

Breathnach commented “There are more than 10,000 people are registered as homeless in Ireland, 6,490 adults and 3,848 children, and yet in the middle of this crisis there are so many properties that are left vacant.”

“The Government has allowed a situation where a whole generation has been locked out of the property ladder, while thousands of properties lay vacant across the country.”

Vacant Home Ireland figures state of the 3,200 properties registered with the website – 48% are in Leinster with most in Dublin and it’s surrounding Counties. Nearly 300 properties of the registered sites have been brought, or are in the process of being brought, back into use.

Breathnach concluded “I would encourage anyone who becomes aware of a vacant property to notify Louth County Council or Vacant Homes Ireland to hopefully bring these homes back into use.”
