Breathnach questions Minister on why Gaeltacht grant was not restored for all students

Post graduate students and students studying in private colleges will not be eligible for the Gaeltacht grant which was recently restored in Budget 2020-

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has asked the Minister for Education why the recently restored Gaeltacht Grant will not be available to Postgraduate students and students studying in private colleges.

The Gaeltacht Grant assists trainee teachers who must attend a placement in the Gaeltacht to complete their college course. The grant was removed in 2013 but was restored in Budget 2020 for most students. However, PME students and students studying in private colleges will not be eligible for the grant.”

“The cost of fees and accommodation is driving students away from university. It’s unfair that on top of that, students are expected to fork out for mandatory placements in the Gaeltacht in order to complete their course.”

“I welcome the fact that the grant has been restored for most students but there is still a cohort of people that won’t be eligible for the grant and they have been let down by this Government.”
