Breathnach calls for more school buses as kids left on side of road

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has said the school bus system is flawed and is leaving families with no way of getting their child to school.

Breathnach commented “My office has been inundated with calls and emails from parents who have been told there is no place for their child on a school bus. This includes those eligible for the School Transfer Scheme and those eligible for a concessionary ticket.”

“Many parents who paid for a place months ago have now been told the place is not available and they will be refunded. Children with a bus ticket have been told they can’t get on the bus, it’s a farcical situation.”

“Speaking as a former teacher, a common-sense approach is needed. If there is not enough space to bring kids to school, a bigger bus should be provided, or additional buses provided. I have contacted the School Bus section of the Department of Education on behalf of many families but there has only been generic and vague responses given. The Minister for Education needs to intervene immediately to ensure no child is left behind.”
