Breathnach says those wishing for a hard Brexit have no regard for the Peace Process
– a hard Brexit will unravel the progress of peace and destroy the all-island economy –
Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach, vice-chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement has said that those wishing for a hard Brexit have no respect for the peace process and the benefits which have accrued from the improved all-island economy.
“These hard Brexiteers are intent on unravelling the progress of peace and have no respect for those living in the North of Ireland and the Border Region. Their arrogance is astounding in refusing to look at workable suggestions and solutions to deal with cross-border trade.
“As a border TD I have vivid memories of living through the troubles, and can see clearly the progress made through the Peace Process. I also clearly remember what life was like pre-EU and can see the benefits of membership. It is imperative that the UK politicians support the backstop or take responsibility for refusing to listen to the voice of reason and the majority opinion within the EU on what is needed for the border and our all-island economy.
