Bus Éireann and Department of Transport urgently need to bring an end to the School Bus chaos – Breathnach

– With the School Year already started families are left with no place on the school transport system for their children –

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach and spoke out against the lack of information and delays in delegating places on the school transport service. He said that the service needs to expand to accommodate every child who seeks a place.

“I concur with my colleague Thomas Byrne TD on this debacle. My office has been inundated with calls from distressed parents who have been told that their children no longer have a space on the school bus, even though they had a space in previous years”.

“This is placing parents in an extremely difficult situation, whether it is parents who have no transport themselves, or parents who are having to delay going to work in order to get their children to school in time”.

“There is a lottery system being used to allocate final places as new term begins, a computerised random selection process carried out to determine which children will be offered a seat on the bus. It is disgraceful that families are being put in this position but in particular, families of children with special needs, who are being denied places on school transport. The problem is further exacerbated by the lack of communication and information, and I know from my colleagues dealing with this issue we are being met with a stone wall when trying to get information on the service for particular families.
“This is unacceptable and more funding needs to be put into this service so that every child can be accommodated.
