Breathnach calls for tougher measures on the perpetrators of crime

– Our ineffective Bail Laws and Justice System need a major overhaul –

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has called in the Dáil this week for tougher measures on the perpetrators of crime.

“Our Programme for Government commits to the protection of all our citizens and a reduction in crime. However the CSO crime figures for 2017 revealed our country has seen a substantial increase in crime rates for all crimes, except homicide. I am sure that the 2018 figures are even worse including murder.

“Our own community in Louth is mourning the violent death of Cameron Reilly in Dunleer and earlier this year Yosuke Sasaki in Dundalk.

“We also in recent years had the murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe and Garda Tony Golden.

“This, coupled with the weekly stories of violent crime using knives and brute force makes for sorry reading.

“Our bail laws need an urgent overhaul, to prevent giving those convicted of crimes the opportunity of committing further and more serious crime, as we witnessed in the tragic death of Shane O’Farrell.

“The people of this country want action on this, as currently there is little to deter those intent on committing crime. We must get tough on crime and the punishment must match the crime and act as a strong deterrent as we see happen in other jurisdictions.”
