Breathnach welcomes measures to tackle illegal dumping
– It is important that we have cross border cooperation on this issue to tackle it properly in our region –
Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has welcomed measures announced by Minister Denis Naughten to tackle illegal dumping, which has been a scourge on our countryside.
“Drones, CCTV and smart technology including aerial imagery from satellites are to be used in a bid to clamp down on illegal dumping. This is a welcome announcement but I would like to see cross border cooperation to clamp down on illegal dumping coming from the North”.
“The funding announced is €2m to tackle litter black-spots around the country. I welcome the fact that unauthorised and bogus waste collectors will also be targeted, who are responsible for a lot of what ends up in our ditches and beauty spots”.
“Measures to get tough on the perpetrators of illegal dumping are long overdue. My hope is that these new methods of detection will result in more prosecutions and will act as a deterrent.”
