Breathnach calls for funding for repair of Third Class Roads
– Third Class Roads have been neglected for years – residents on these roads are treated like “third class citizens” –
Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach called in the Dáil for more funding for third class roads as he reiterated to the Taoiseach that third class roads have been neglected for years.
“Residents along these rural roads are being treated like “third class citizens” as repairs on these tertiary roads have been neglected for years”.
“Some of these roads are impassable as cars and residents suffer – I want the Government to intervene on this issue by instructing Local Authorities to fund the repair of Third Class Roads rather than leaving total autonomy with the Councils as to how their funding is spent. This has been the problem, the Local Authorities are directing funding to the busier roads, and leaving the Third Class Roads to deteriorate with no prospect of funding or even being considered for Local Improvement Schemes (LIS) or Community Involvement Schemes (CIS).”
“People on these roads are paying their motor taxes, tractor taxes, property taxes the same as everyone else and deserve equity. I have sent a letter to Minister Shane Ross calling for action on this issue”, concluded Breathnach.
