Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on North-South Bodies & Cross Border Co-operation Declan Breathnach says Sinn Fein’s call for a border call is nothing more than political opportunism and fails to recognise the seriousness of the fallout of the Brexit referendum result for the island of Ireland.

Responding to Britain’s decision to leave the EU, Deputy Breathnach said, “While the result is very regrettable, it has to be respected.  As an island, we must now stand united so that we can work to address the challenges that this result poses for our people.

“I believe that Sinn Fein is being opportunistic calling for a border poll now.  This is a time for cool, calm heads not knee jerk reactions.

The Louth Deputy added, “Another constitutional referendum in the aftermath of this Brexit vote will only exacerbate uncertainty and instability. Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan should meet with Secretary of State Villiers as soon as possible to set in place protocols on how to deal with border issues.

“Sinn Fein’s crude, ill thought out opportunism achieves nothing and potentially worsens the situation”.
